Guest Speakers

Dr. Robert T. O’Brien, DVM, DACVR,

Dr O’Brien will be discussing the new technologies and their implications for Radiologists facing new technology challenges in previously unseen diagnostic images. As a boarded Radiologist, Dr. O’Brien brings more than 20 years worth of experience and knowledge of veterinary imaging. Dr. O’Brien began his image-related training at the University of Pennsylvania where he worked many prestigious veterinarians investigating new and novel imaging protocols and methodology. He adopted a philosophy of “test all preconceptions” and reject the “old and unprovable”. Along his academic career he became the world’s expert in contrast ultrasound imaging; resulting in the landmark manuscript describing the appearance of liver nodules with contrast ultrasound. More recently Dr. O’Brien pushed the traditional limitations of conventional CT with many novel ‘awake’ imaging protocols, including those for dyspneic cats, dogs with PTE, left sided congestive heart failure in cats, large bronchial collapse in dogs, whole body imaging with dogs with blunt or penetrating trauma and dogs with acute abdominal signs. Dr. O’Brien has taken this open-mindedness and scientific inquisitive nature to a new form of CT.

In The Media: NEW TECHNOLOGY SURPRISING EVEN THE EXPERTS

With the amount of anatomical detail now able to be captured at a ‘never seen before’ standard, it has no doubt lead to some confusion with Specialists and Radiographers worldwide.  ‘The problem we are now encountering is there is so much information being captured with this new technology,  Radiologists and Vets are not used to seeing this level of detail.  It’s not only showing highly specific detail of anatomy, it’s a whole new world of being able to accurately diagnose conditions that were previously undiagnosable’ says Justin Baldwin, CEO & Director of Just Imaging, Australia’s leading importer of new innovation diagnostic technology.

A need for an expanded level of knowledge and understanding to read and interpret diagnostic images has become necessary to quickly catch up with the technology.  Justin went on to say, ‘It’s fascinating watching the faces of Veterinarians and Radiologists as they begin to comprehend the level of detail now being captured and just how much they are seeing’.

‘We have been working to bring new technology into Australia as large company corporate agenda will often see old technology still being sold long after it has been surpassed.  The uptake of these new technology products have been significant in the USA and we’re really happy to see it now available on Australian shores’.

‘We’re finding we are needing a strong platform of supportive education for people in the industry to help them understand what they are seeing from these new results in imaging quality.’ Says Justin Baldwin.   This has also lead to a specialised veterinary Radiology reporting team trained in this new technology to provide a worldwide 24 hour radiology reporting service.
